About me
RUI
CHENG
I am Cheng Rui, a young photographer and visual artist from China, currently based in Hong Kong. I am studying Image Design and Digital Arts.
In my creative projects, I have long contemplated the element of "emptiness" in Eastern philosophy. To me, photography requires no deliberate embellishment—only the documentation of truth.
摒弃矫饰,忠于本真
My artistic motto: No Overstyling, Only Truth. The lens is my sole way of conversing with the world. Within pale, muted light and shadow, I capture the tender traces of humanity and place, quietly overlooked by the noise of the world.I believe the finest photographs are never merely taken, but quietly encountered.

The Way I See Photography
“Producing unrefined shots is the inherent norm of photography.” Yet I hold a different perspective: when revisiting those so-called flawed works, one will realize they are never failures—they are fragments of life itself. As the final chapter of Those Stories of the Ming Dynasty turns away from heroic legends to portray Xu Xiake’s solitary journey, it conveys a simple truth: one ought to live in accordance with one’s own will. This same philosophy applies to photography. If we refrain from capturing a frame merely for its imperfection, we forfeit the unique state of mind belonging to that fleeting moment. We can never return to the younger version of ourselves in that precise instant. For ordinary creators, Cartier-Bresson’s concept of the decisive moment lies not in rigorous aesthetics, but in the intuitive act of lifting the camera to document whatever stirs one’s perception. No frame of mind, no phase of youth, no subtle ambient mood may ever be replicated again.
